Spring is a wonderful time of year full of renewal and rejuvenation. People and animals come out of hibernation both figuratively and in reality. In northern climates the snow melts to reveal, first, the accumulated dirt of winter, to be followed by new growth of lawns, trees, flowers and wildlife.
For some of us, those with fair weather retreats such as cabins, lodges and cottages, spring is a time of waiting… and some years, like this one, the waiting seems interminable while we wait for snow to disappear so we can once again start our weekly treks to our wonderful retreat… a log cabin in the woods.
Spring here got off to a great start with some early mild weather and lots of snow melting. We anticipated an early opening of our lodge. Then it all just kind of stopped as we had several weeks of grey days and cold temperatures. Not really cold, mind you, just cold enough that the snow was hardly melting.
Still, I shouldn’t really complain. We have relatives in Ontario where they had a few major spring snow storms. So while we have almost no snow, they still have six foot snowbanks! And in reality we’ll be back to our lodge in a matter of weeks (assuming we don’t get hit with a major spring snow, which can certainly happen!).
In the meantime, we’re preparing for our first visit, accumulating the various items we need to open up for the season. But like a child waiting for Christmas morning, it just seems to be taking forever!
My husband and children have lived in the Great Smoky Mountain area for fourteen years. We love it. It’s very family oriented. I wish we’d get a little more snow around here.
Funny thing, when we have a night get away, often we’ll rent a cabin at thecabinkeeper.com. and stay at a cabin close to home (in case we need to get back to our children).
Despite the fact we live here, we still, after 14 years enjoy exploring localy and visiting different cabins in cool areas.
We were introduced to this cabin company about a year ago(I’ll include a link in the signature since I don’t know how in this part of the message). We’ve stuck with these folks cause treat us special and their cleaning practices are borderline obsessive. I mean their place are immaculate. Their beds are clean (everything) and not just the sheets. They leave coffee, gourmet chocolates and flowers and have a wonderful guarantee! My husband won’t hardly leave the cabins.
I’m posting this beacause they truly deserve to be acknowledged for how good of job they do in such a sea of competition. Quite frankly, I don’t think they have any competition.
If they could just make it snow!
Oh well, hope this helps someone looking to visit the Smokies
